Mavericks Gear Up for Longhaul without Overhaul

The Dallas Mavericks have made many small changes this off-season to improve the team. We have made upgrades at almost every roster spot without even touching our core. We lost a lot of talent in potential in Marquis Daniels but we drafted an adequate perimeter defender in Maurice Ager that brings more of an outside game in addition to his ability to slash and cut. We are replacing Dirk's back-up role with Austin Croshere. Croshere offers the same ability to knock down the three-point shot while also being able to bang down low. Croshere is notably a much better free throw shooter. Darrell Armstrong has been a solid contributor for us--but not on the floor. While he probably averaged the most charges per 48 minutes in the league, he flat out wasn't a contributing factor consistently. With the acquisition of veteran point guard Anthony Johnson, Avery will be able to play that one-two punch of Harris and Terry more often. He also is a bulky 6-3, 200 lb point guard that has proven himself in the league. Should Devin Harris not turn out to be all that we have hoped him to become, we have acquired Anthony Johnson as a relatively cheap and experienced, insurance policy. Adriag Griffin was the closest piece to being considered part of the "core" that we lost. He was a solid defender, and a great hustle player. We replaced him with Greg Buckner who is just as good of a defender (arguably better) and he can also step out to shoot the three-pointer as well to spread the defense. Devean George has the potential to be a solid role-player for us. He has an attractive 6-8, 235 frame that will help us with our versatility. He surprisingly is one inch shorter and ten pounds heavier than Josh Powell. With that said, their lies a likelihood that he might see some time at the power forward this season. He is a griddy defender who can step back and shoot the three-pointer. His athleticism, despite his size, also gives him Bonzi Wells potential to punish smaller defenders on the block with his size and strength. The Mavericks have made some key acquisitions and wonderful moves to improve a solid team even more. The players we have gained will allow us many more combinations and much more flexibility than even before. Our bench now contains several players that could start on other teams not to mention the fact that it could be argued that our bench alone could contend for a spot in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. With added fire-power and flexibility coupled with the bitter taste in our mouths from that finals last year, I fully expect a revamped Dallas Mavericks to come out hungry for not only one title but a Dallas Dynasty.
